THE PLYMOUTH SOUTH BEACH REVIEW

THE PLYMOUTH SOUTH BEACH REVIEW

The Plymouth South Beach is a historic art deco boutique hotel and is a Small Luxury Hotels of the World property. It was built in 1940 and most of the building maintains its original Art Deco Architecture. Overall I really enjoyed my stay in December 2022 and would stay here again. Here is my review and video tour below.

Plymouth Hotel Classic King Room Tour

The Room

The hotel was renovated in 2017 and the rooms and bathrooms still look very current. I loved my room. I booked the Classic King Room which is their least expensive room. The rooms are decorated in white, pink, creme and gray and the furnishings are from Restoration Hardware. The bed was extremely comfortable. The bathroom is a French style with an enclosed rain shower which had fairly strong shower pressure. The Molton Brown toiletries smelled so fantastic that I went online and ordered some from Saks.

The Restaurant & Bar

The Blue Ribbon Sushi Bar & Grill is located at the hotel and the food and cocktails were delicious. They had a daily happy hour from 4-7 with $9 Sushi Rolls, $8 Cocktails, $7 Wine and Draft Beer and $6 Sake and Edamame. There are also plenty of restaurants to choose from within a 7-10 minute walk of the hotel.

The Pool

I loved the Art Deco pool. It didn’t have the party atmosphere that many South Beach hotels have. On the hotel’s website it says the pool was “Recently ranked in the top 15 most jaw-dropping pools in Miami by the New York Times, our 1940’s Art Moderne pool area is not one to be missed. Featuring harlequin tiles and a peach and brown palette, it is a photo op favorite that evokes a pure Miami feeling. Lounge in one of the cabanas, under the striped umbrellas, or enjoy a cocktail from the Pool Bar.”

The Location

I think the Plymouth Hotel South Beach is a good place to stay if you are looking for a hotel that is centrally located and more quiet than many parts of South Beach. I didn’t notice late night partying like I have at other hotels in South Beach. I was there Sunday – Wednesday so I suppose it’s possible the weekends could be noisier. I liked being in this part of South Beach. It wasn’t as far North as some resorts like The Confidante, The Cadillac or The Palms and wasn’t too close to the noisier Art Deco District and Ocean Drive. It’s about a 15 – 18 minute walk or $10 Uber ride to Lincoln Road and Espanola Way where there are plenty of restaurants and shops. It’s about a 25 minute walk to the heart of the Art Deco District.

The Free Miami Beach Trolley has 4 routes and 3 of the 4 routes pick up a few blocks from the hotel. The trolley runs every 20 minutes from 8am – 11pm. The Collins Express, Middle Beach and South Beach loops all have stops a few blocks from the hotel. You can also download the City of Miami Beach App so you can track where the trolley is. Here is the link to more information about the trolley: https://www.miamibeachfl.gov/city-hall/transportation/trolley/

Miami Beach has a fantastic beach boardwalk with a 7 mile bike and walking path that goes all the way from the southern most part of South Beach called South Pointe Park all the way north to Surfside. There are Citibikes you can rent all over the city and there are 3 Citibike locations within a few blocks of the hotel. The easiest thing to do is download the Citibike Miami app and enter your credit card information. Once you get to the bike pick up location it’s very easy to unlock the bike. You can rent the bikes for $4.95 to $35 depending on how long you want it for. I rented an hour at a time for $6.95.

The Beach

The property is a few blocks from the beach and they offer complimentary transportation. There is a $45/night resort fee (common for South Beach) which includes beach access, 2 chairs and towels. You can rent an umbrella for $25 a day.

Me relaxing on the beach.

Hyatt Partnership

Hyatt has a partnership with Small Luxury Hotels so you can book the Plymouth with Hyatt Points. It is a Category 5 property which requires 17,000 – 23,000 points a night. Even if you have Hyatt Globalist status the resort fee is not waived. At SLH properties World of Hyatt members get complimentary continental breakfast for two, free Wi-Fi, early check-in, late check-out and a room upgrade (all based on availability).  The hotel was not serving breakfast when I was there so they give vouchers for Orange Blossom which is a few blocks away. They offered complimentary coffee in the lobby and it wasn’t really anything special. Joe & The Juice is a few blocks away. There are Illy espresso machines in the rooms and pods in the minibar for $2 each.

The cash rate ranges from $200 – $650 a night and there is a $45/night resort fee. You can find some great deals on Monday and Tuesday nights.

The only negative thing I have to say about the hotel is that the furniture in the lobby, pool area and common areas was pretty worn and so were the awnings and umbrellas. I have heard others’ complain about this but it really wasn’t that big of a deal to me.

In Conclusion

I really enjoyed my stay and would stay at the Plymouth South Beach again especially if I really wanted a more quiet hotel. I don’t think I would spend that many Hyatt points on this property as I prefer the Confidante, but if I found a good cash deal then I would happily stay here again.
